Region free Blu ray Players?
« on: 30 Sep 2019, 09:50 pm »
Anybody got any experience or recommendations?

Tired of waiting for some things to get released in the USA, so I did something foolish and went ahead and ordered a UK Movie (which will take some time to get here) and now I need to find an “inexpensive” Region Free Blu ray player to purchase.

All sorts of models and prices found here-

Yup, I ran across them and looked at user reviews of the various models they carry. Seemed to be all over the place. It seems they have a high rate of problems right off the bat (looking at reviews at Amazon and elsewhere).

Thought maybe somebody here had found something they liked and would recommend it.

Leaning towards a Sony or LG. A few of the other brands (Chinese?) really get bad reviews.

If you want dependable, get a used Oppo, then add a region free kit.  A used 95 is around $350-400, add another 50 for a kit.
Good quality, but you have to pay for it.  It's also a killer quality cd/sacd player.
Older but still good are the model 83's.  Less than $200 and I think all you have to do make them region free is type in a code sequence.

If you're going to want 4K output, I really like the Sony players.

Hadn’t thought very much about that!  :duh:

I have a 95 that I no longer use. I lent it to a friend for awhile, then it developed loading issues (door won’t open. Haven’t looked in to it at all), he sent it back to me and I’ve kind of forgotten about it. I need to dig it out and have a look.

Where do you go to look for a region free Mod?

They've gone up! Surprise.  The one Phil found looks like the cheapest.
The one I installed looks like this one.

That’s where I got mine for my Oppo 103.

Looks like they have one for the 205 as well, which is my current player. (I ASSUME that it would still work with the ModWright version). Minimal info on their website. Does it get plugged in to the USB slot or is it internal?

Thanks. Was it a fairly easy/straight-forward install? (Any soldering?)

It was very easy to install, no soldering.  There’s an empty connector on the Oppo circuit board where you plug in the region free mod.

I have a region-free, or all-region player, however you want to put it, Sony blue ray player and dozens of UK discs I use on it. Never have had a problem.

Out of curiousity....... (and since I’m contemplating getting something anyway - wife’s new laptop doesn’t have an internal drive)

Could I buy an external Computer Blu ray drive that doesn’t have any regional restrictions?
