What pmc loudspeckers for a 16 *18 ft room?
« on: 3 Feb 2005, 12:35 pm »
I am considering buying a new pair of pmc speakers to use as the main pair for music/ home theater purposes. I am trying to decide between OB1, IB1 and IB2. Unfortunately I am not able to audition any of these so any comments/suggestions would be very welcome.

My listening room/ living room  is 16ft by 18 ft with a ceiling which slopes down from double normal height to normal room height. As a result the distance from speaker to ceiling will be considerably greater for the right speaker when companred with the left. The speakers would be positioned about 10 ft appart either side of a big fireplace. about 12-14 ft from my normal listening position.

My amplifications is currently a Bryston 3BST and 8B ST. I would consider getting an SST series amp (probably 4B SST) in the future for use with the new pmc speakers.

Thanks for your help.

I think that your room is big enough for all the speakers you mentioned, eventhough PMC recommends bigger rooms for the IB1,IB2. I heard them in a smaller room and it was superb.
In absolute terms I think that comparing the IB2 to the OB1 is almost a joke . It is on a completely different plato. You get what you pay for.

My advice is that you turn your system 90 degrees so that both speakers will be under the low ceiling side. This way the ceiling will slope up towards the listening position.   It will be a  shame if you'll spend so much money on a great system and will not hear it at its best.

plavosn,

I have IB1s and the dedicated IB1 center in my 13.5 x 18.5' room and they sound fantastic.  They are setup along the long wall so the left, right, and listener form an 8' equilateral triangle.  I haven't heard the OB1, nor the IB2 so I can't comment on those models. I have tried an 8B-ST, 3B-ST, and 4B-ST with the IB1's and have found I prefer the 4B-ST which seems to provide more authoritative bass. I haven't heard the SST line so I can't comment.
