JVC RX F-10 & Maggies...
« on: 1 Feb 2005, 08:56 pm »
I'm a newbie here,so excuse any goofs if you will! I'd been reading about the digital recievers and just had to try the JVC RX- F10 with my SMGA's after seeing Chair Guy &  Horizons' posts about it..($229 delivered from J&R in two days!) Well I hooked it up, set the input to DVD multi, set the speakers to front large, all others "no". When I tried playing my analog source through it-the protection circuit kick it off at low to mid volume!
The old maggies are the same 4 ohm load as the MMG's or 1.6's!  :?
Is there something I'm missing?-I'd like to see what the buzz is about!

sfox, here are some thoughts for you until you get a more educated response:

The speaker clips on the back of the F10 are very close together.  Any possibility of a short?  Could it be that when you turn the volume up, there's some kind of arcing going on between exposed wires?

Are you using the inputs marked DVD Right and Left on the lower tier of jacks?  That should be the DVD-Multi input, despite what it says on the upper tier of jacks.

In addition to setting the other speakers to No, did you check the the other setup settings, such as making sure Surround is off?

How about trying your source through one of the other channels?  How about putting it on the DBS input?  Does that also activate the protection circuit?  Also, does turning the volume up on FM have this effect, too?

Hey sfox50, welcome to AC! (even if you've been lurking out there awhile   )

Boy, sounds like you got it right in setup...hmmm.

Try another analog input like VCR In and see if same happens. Does AM and FM work at low-moderate volumes?

If it does not, sounds like you have a unit that may be heating up and shutting down.  My (former) ES1sl couldn't drive the Maggies and had a thermal shutdown - it wouldn't go back on until 15 minutes later after turning it off and cooling down.

The speaker wire shorting is a good place to start. Those connects are a total joke.

I unpacked my JVC and plugged in my DAC to the DVD inputs, switched to DVD/Multi and that was it. Maybe the defaults were preset at the factory but it sounded so good immediately that I never messed with other settings. I am a firm beleiver in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

This unit has been driving my Maggie 1.6 QRs since late December (almost every day) and it has never shut down once. And I have pushed it, let me tell you. My 15 year old son plays Black Sabbath and ear-splitting levels on this system and it has never failed. My ears went into protective shutdown but the system didn't.

Don't give up on this JVC yet!

OK-Maybe you guys can help me sort this out- when I select "DVD-Multi"
I hear a relay click, and all of the speaker indicators are lit, even though I have all but the fronts set to "no".If I switch to,say, DVD/DVR or VCR,the fronts are the only ones shown on the indicators.I haven't yet tried driving the speakers in those modes-I was under the impression that DVD multi is the only way to really hear just the amp in this thing...Even if it turns out that I can't use it for the maggies,I'll probably keep it for my family room A/V & stereo use- I have an old Sherwood A/V reciever there now,& this one looks like it has some cool features compared to it.

Oh,well- It's on its way back to J&R- I really wanted it to work, though I'm not unhappy with the way my old B&K ST140 sounds..I was afraid to try it on my surround setup because the center & fronts have around 5 ohm measured impedence.. funny how the old  Sherwood does OK with 'em!
