I didn't realize there was a short film with Billy Bob Thornton as Karl that eventually was adapted into the full-length movie "Slingblade".  It's basically the first section of the movie in which Molly Ringwald interviews Karl in the asylum about his earlier crime. Netflix offers this  version.

The way I heard it, he did this short to show at some of the film festivals, and because the acclaim it received, was able to get the financial backing for the full-length film. A great movie, and his best work, IMO. I still to this day do not like Dwight Yoakam!
