odyssey lorelei speakers vs. Gallo Reference
« on: 24 Jan 2005, 01:09 am »
Folks
After reading so much about the Lorelei speakers (but never heard them), now I am curious..... I was wondering if anyone had heard both the Lorelei and the Gallo Reference (any version)? I dont think the Gallos excel in the bass compared to the Loreleis, but I am interested to know how the compare in soundstage, warmth, mids and highs.

thanks
Sridhar

I heard the Reference 3 very briefly during a hifi show. It was not a conductive place to do a proper audition but I did have a major problem with the Ref 3 - it's too short and thus really need to be on some stands. The presentation of music was below ear level...so I really couldn't make out its qualities. IMHO, these speakers definitely need stands (I think there dedicated stands).

Please don't get me wrong...I am not writing off the Ref 3 at all! I am just saying I feel that Ref 3 need stands before I could make its qualities.

Alex,
thanks for your reply. I know exactly what you mean, when I heard them, we had the spikes adjusted such that they tilt upwards - that took care of this issue a little bit. But this would depend greatly on the size of the listening room too I suppose.

Found that stand I was talking about. By Bright Star...

But obviously it has some 'height' issues. I think only with proper stands one can really audition it.

I listened to both speakers at the HE show in SF last year.

Both are great speakers and you can't go wrong with either.

The Lorelei was auditioned in a very small room while the Ref3 was in a rather cavernous room.  So I couldn't do an apples to apples comparo.

I can tell you that the Lorelei (and all Odyssey speakers for that matter) sounded REALLY good and consistently offered the best sound in their price brackets by a good margin.

The Ref 3 played big for such a small speaker and imaged well, but played less immediate than the Lorelei, but that's b/c it was in a large room.

All in all, the Lorelei just sounds right.  A very nice piece of equipment. :)
