The RM40 "uppah" woofer upgrade

Ok, for those who missed some of my post about this, B, has this thing about tyring to improve on a "good thing".

As it turns out it all started with the RM30.  In designing the RM30 he found that using the dual 6.5 megaWoofers added a little more "leading edge" impact to drum strikes and such.

The speed of the woofs, plus having them at "gut level", and adjusting the x-over up to the 180-220 range gave "High Impact" a new name (VMPS  )

Well the RM40 has its upper bass driver somewhere around head level for most, and unless you were in a very large room, it didn't have the "degree" of impact that some might have desired. (enter my Sonic Director Tweak)

Well things have changed.  Brian has allowed his creativity to "wrap around" a new approach to provide a realistic level of upper bass impact and mid bass majesty, which also translates into "a more complete bass" perfromance, beyond expectations

While similar in appearances the upper and lower bass woofers of the RM40 are not the same driver, and cover different frequency ranges.

While most would say that the "handoff" (transitional blending) from one to the next was seamless, the new combo does an even a better job.

Why?  Because now they "ARE" the same driver, but he has implemented a new technology to the "magnetization" (that's my term and I'm sticking to it).

This new technology allows him to use the same driver and still cover the different frequency ranges by magnetizing them differently. (don't ask me how its done, I'm just a simple messenger  )

He also now can x-over the upper woofer at around 200Hz to capitalize on the improvement.

So to make a long story short, the new RM40 BCSE with this upper bass driver is pretty phenomenal and it improves overall bass in the process.

But...The bad news is, it is not a simple "Swaperoo".

B, has offered to make this an "in the feild upgrade", but since in many cases it will involve a cap change crossover mod, one needs some soldering skill to make the leap.

So here is how it looks:

To upgrade a pair of the upper woofs, it is $200

This will get you a pair of the new woofs, and a stock set of x-over/caps.

If you have TRT caps, or Auricaps, then the it will be more (price to come soon) since you will need to replace one cap in each speaker.

Shipping is $15.

As far as I know, all new RM40s will be shipped with this upgrade already installed.

That might seal it for me.  I was wavering between the RM30 and the RM40.

I think it is Game, Set, Match(ing) woofers for me.

Do you have to ship parts back?  Would reduce costs if you did?

Can we also lower the Tweeter frequency at the same time from 10Khz to 6.9 with a XO part change?

TIA

John,

I'm certain this is a noticeable improvement in just the way you state it.  And since some owners have spoke of this "deficiency" in their systems, it'll come in handy for them.

However, in my system, drums and upper bass impact is absolutely a strong suit.  In fact, if leading edge transients have any more impact, my guests may have to pick their teeth fillings off the floor.  :D

I ask B, if he wanted the Woofers sent back and he said no.

As far as the tweeter x-over, you might post Brian direct, since they are two seperate issues.

However it would make sense to do them both at the same time.

Interesting -- Maybe I'll use my woofers for another sub.
