Welcome to AC John!

To learn about the technical aspects of loudspeaker operation there are few better guides than "The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook" by Vance Dickason. Be sure to get the latest version, which I think is 7.

Welcome John.

Several have tread the same path as you propose.

Very little new in speaker design for the past say 50 years, although Martin King has developed a MathCad application that can be applied to a variety of speaker types.

Drivers have improved marginally in that time.

Unfortunately most speakers have way too much invested in finishes.

I had Bob Brines (now retired in Arkansas) design and build my speakers.  He is a gentleman, knowledgeable in MathCad, and charged very reasonable rates.

Take care and have fun.
