Is there a way to suppress the Folder Build?
« on: 20 Dec 2018, 04:09 am »
My preferred method of building playlists is to use MM to browse using the hierarchy: genre, artist, album (which is the way the music is stored on the hard drive). Since the latest firmware update, I notice that when i switch levels in the hierarchy (e.g. from artist back to genre), MM appears to re-build the folders at that level with every level change. Why is this necessary if I have not updated the Bryston DB? I am using a scratch disk, so I would expect the "folder build structure and images " be stored after an update and not have to be re-generated. The process is very slow (I have a lot of music: a 1TB internal and 4TB external drive) and detrimentally affects my enjoyment of my BDP-2. Is this a ploy to encourage BDP-x owners to upgrade to the faster processor in the BDP-3? Is there a setting that I am missing in MM?

I think my SCRATCH disk may have become corrupted. I will re-format and report back.

As a wild guess the folders are too big for the RAM memory to keep the old one and the new one.
So the cache is discarding the old one as soon as the new one is building and gets bigger than the RAM can hold (both). So naturally it is going to dump the previous one to handle the new one.
With five terabytes of data, I can see it happening..
If you had only two Terabytes I bet it would stop..
So either you need more RAM, in your current player, or a new player with more RAM.
I have no idea if you can even add more?
Also, if there is enough, perhaps something else is being done, some junk is being saved endlessly that has caused your machine to stop saving folders so it can save the useless junk? Computers used to do that all the time and need a 'cleaning app' to fix it.

A scratch disk is a form of temporary storage and is often used as an extension of internal memory. When the internal memory is full, data can be offloaded to a "scratch disk".

According to the MM manual (p.13) one can set up a disk as a scratch disk under Disk Information in the Dashboard section of MM:

"Scratch: Set the selected partition as a scratch drive to enable cover art to be used in Artist View. A spare thumb drive or any other locally connected disk can be safely used. "

I re-formatted by Scratch disk (USB flash drive) and re-set it as the Scratch disk and all seems to be working well now. Movements between folders and the hierarchy are almost instantaneous without the lag I was experiencing before while the Folder Build was being recalculated. Problem solved!

I wish my problems with the BDP-3 were as solvable!

Ever since installing an internal 2 TB SSD drive (Crucial MX500 series) in my BDP-3 it has stopped functioning. And not only does it not read the new SSD drive, but it no longer recognizes the HDD that I had been using with it for some months. Unless and until I figure this out, the BDP-3 is just taking up room in the rack.

Most likely I'll have to entice an engineer friend who is also an audio hobbyist to spend an afternoon troubleshooting.

There seems to be a lot of problems with the coming of computers to audio. I had a Denon DN-700C network player which couldn't read even a USB stick with one album stored on it. Returned it, got a replacement, and have just returned that one. . .after the engineer mentioned above spent an entire evening trying to get it to work. . .

A first good step might be to take us up on our offer to investigate the problem
