Sony to Sanyo ?
« on: 12 Jun 2017, 09:33 pm »
Still wondering why the Sony drive was changed to a Sanyo when the BCD3 went into production. Was it considered a better ,more reliable unit? Will it be something easier to replace in case of future breakdowns ?  Thanks  James, I need to know before I spring for the new player. The  CD1 is great but seems unfixable thanks to Phillips's lack of drives..... :thumb:

OK I have the straight goods.

There never was a Sony drive - just the Sony Laser.

We buy the drive from Stream Unlimited and they originally used the Sony Laser but now use the Sanyo laser due to availability.

The good thing is that Stream Unlimited manufactures the drive and a lot of manufacturer's use it so it looks like it will continue to be manufacture for many years to come.

As always there are no guarantees with technologies that are no longer supported by mainstream manufactures.

Will there be a  BOT2 ?  If so could it use the same drive tray loader as the  BCD3 ? :thumb:

HI

No the BOT uses a different kind of drive (slot load) and they are readily available from many manufactures as they are DVD  drives not CD dedicated drives.
