My NUC is due to be delivered today. I bought one loaded and with 10 pro installed. I will follow your progress and see it Rock is applicable. I don't do Tidal or Roon. I am still using Jriver media center.

Will keep an eye on this. Hope to have Roon in my system someday, and want the best/cheapest combo I can get away with to accomplish that goal. I'm comfortable assembling simple Computer hardware and straight forward Software installs, so it seems like something I can do.

Need to figure out what all I need (I don't really understand whatever "Roon Ready" means on my Oppo 205 - seems like I still need all the same Hardware)

Yeah, been through most of that (as well as a few other things)

If I go with NUC (as opposed to a Mac Mini, which several friends recommend), I'm not sure I gain much - if anything.

They recommend the 2014 Era Mini's with the right configuration which is roughly the same as what Hardware the NUC would require, but they say that the Mini is likely to sound better (Roon says different).

The i7 NUC with everything needed except hard drive for storage is a bit more expensive than a rebuilt used, customized Mini, but it's pretty close. Looking at advantages for either.

......but I still don't get "Roon Ready" on my Oppo 205 - I still need the exact same additional Hardware near as I can tell)

Well, after a few hiccups, it went rather smooth.  I have a new MacBook Pro so there are no USB ports only USB-C.  Ended up running to Target to get a USB keyboard. and a USB/USB-C adapter so I could use a flash drive.  Didn't have to update the BIOS as it was already a version newer than 46. Making the changes in the BIOS was rather easy as well

I am rather glad I returned the Nucleus.  At half the price, I got an i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 250GB M.2 SSD and a 1TB 2.5 SSD for internal storage instead of the Nucleus' 4GB RAM and 64MB M.2 SSD.

"Roon ready" describes a playback client to which Roon server "Core" can send music for rendering, aka DAC, like a 'printer' for the roon server. Every roon system requires a Roon server. The oppo is not capable of being a Roon server so you need a computer to do that. Then the Roon server will send music to your Roon Ready oppo player, via Usb I assume.

Ive been using Roon + Tidal for 15 months now. It has some minor foibles as does all software butoverall it is excellent. The combination has drastically improved how I listen to music.

I use a dell tower as core and send music across my lan to Sotm sms200 which sends usb to my dac. It sounds great and works smoothly. But I'd like to take the Lan out of the equation and use a NUC so I can play other music apps besides Roon too.
