CD remote shuts off amp
« on: 30 May 2017, 01:20 am »
I recently put a different CD player into my system (it's an Onyx) and it sits on the shelf above my W4S STi-500.  When I hit the button to skip a track on my CD player remote it shuts off my amp (and doesn't do anything to the CD player). Has anyone else had this happen? Aside from removing the CD player from the rack or take it out of the system is there a possible fix?

Thanks, Brett

Brett,

Interesting issue. Do you have your 12V DC trigger on the rear of the amp engaged? And also, I would be surprised if your amp accepts remote codes (most don't).

Anand,

My amp does have a DC Trigger as shown:

I don't know how to engage it and there's nothing plugged into it....so I assume it's not engaged.  I'm sorry I'm a newbie to this.  And I don't see that I can input remote codes.

G Georgopoulus,

So it's the cdp remote that's gone bad?  Its funny as only a couple CD remote buttons affect the amp.

Thanks guys.  This may be an omen that I need to get a digital music player...

In my experience it wasn't the remote control but the cdp,the trigger on your amp has nothing to do with it as far as i can tell.Cheap Brands like yours aren't worth fixing.IMHO.

Thanks for your input, I think you're correct. I need to move away from CD players and I think this is the opportunity.

Well, clearly something is triggering the amp to shut off.  :)

I would disable any IR repeaters/blasters/etc that might be in use.
Then unplug AC power from the CD player and see if the remote still shuts off your amplifier.

This seems more like an amplifier problem and not a CD player problem, to me.

Dave.

Brettio, I looked up your amp, from the image you posted it appears to be a STI v2 integrated amp with a fully functional remote control capability. It looks like you can can now control two pieces of gear with one remote.
I would say you have some overlapping control codes. Not an uncommon occurrence in this day and age.  The remote for your integrated amp may also control some functions on your CD player. This may be a pain in the ass, but I don't think anything broken.

That was my second suspicion, 2 companies, one located in the U.K. , the other in CA, having similar remote codes, go figure  :duh:

One option is to not use the remote and switch the track manually. The other option is as you suggested, fast forward to a computer based server...

Anand.

Thank you everyone for your help on this. I would bet it's a case of overlapping codes. The good news is that the amp and cdp both do what they're supposed to do, so for the short term I'm going to just have to get up and manually change tracks.

Again I appreciate all the help.  Thank you, Brett

I've had this happen with my Ayre and Auralic gear. They must have used the same IR codes and one would control the other. The solution was to cover up the IR sensor on one piece with a small piece of wood or tin foil. The only other option is to replace the Onyx CD player with a different brand.

I've seen it happen to others and they covered it with electrical tape.  The equipment was black and it was hardly noticeable (one can get silver too).
