Feedback on DIY bass traps please...
« on: 17 Nov 2004, 06:16 pm »
In an effort to treat the listening area in a recently finished basement I made a modified version of Jon Risch's panels based on materials I was able to obtain locally. Big thanks to Jon for all the info available online! They have definitely improved the sound which is all that matters, but Im wondering if there is room for improvement.

They consist of 1X4 frames, 1" rigid fiberglass panels (3lb/sq. ft.) and 6.5" thick kraft faced fiberglass wrapped in poly batting. They measure 8ft. by 2ft. and are placed diagonally in the corners behind my Magneplanar MMG's.

Given this recipe any thoughts on effectiveness? Would there be a benefit from doing something to the space behind the panels? I'm thinking about an 8' length of rolled insulation tacked to the wall. Or tacking a 1' strip of the rigid glass to the walls on each side of the corner--essentially creating a rigid fiberglass triangle.

Thanks,

Steve

Perhaps extend those custom made traps to the ceiling.

Then use some 1"-2" thick 2.00pcf for first reflection points and on the wall in between the speakers.

Thanks for the input. The corner traps do extend from floor to ceiling. I also built two 48"X24" panels the placement of which I continue to play around with. My main question stems from the fact that they are all built w/ 3lb instead of the recomended 6lb rigid panels. Would the tall traps benefit from added insulation on the back side.

Thanks,

Steve

The higher density panels are more useful for low frequency absorbtion.

Low Density panels are for mid/high frequency absorbtion (as is the pink stuff at home depot).

So depending on what you want to achieve, let those things be your starting point.  Next up is placement which you already seem to have down fine.  Experimentation is often the best way to figure out where to place things and you might want to watch Ethan Whiner's videos over at www.realtraps.com

You already know to place your bass traps in the corner which is where they will be most effective but your room has more corners too.  Where the wall meets the ceiling/floor is a corner.

However, if all you are running is MMG's, then bass problems aren't going to be as significant as with some speakers. (if you have a sub, then you may want to try a few more bass traps).

I hope this helps further things along.
