Another good find on Ebay -- the seller listed it as a no name speaker with just the model number AP-5. When I saw the picture it reminded me of Digital Phase. With shipping included it was $43. They are from the 90's and use to list direct for around $499 a pair. This is the unique thing, it is a 2-way bookshelf with a 3" woofer.:) They call their design Acousta Reed Technology, and the designer is Daryl Powell.

The speakers are 13" h x 8.5" w x 9" d and weigh around 13 lb -- with that 3" woofer and 1" spun titanium tweeter. The top sides and bottom are black oak with texture painted black front baffle and back panel. The crossover is 12 db octave on the woofer and tweeter with big coils and poly caps. There is a resistor and it is not typical sandcast.

I did some testing and they really have some bass. The goal of the designer was to be +/- 1.5 db from 35 to 20 khz. I did some minor testing in my room, and they could play the 41 E1 electric bass note at moderate levels and also 41 E1 organ note. And they sounded nice at moderate levels 42--48 with bass test sweeps from test tones. However the sacrifice with these speakers is that the sensitivity is around 81 db and are rated 60 watts.

They do sound quite nice, the tweeter is not harsh. The bass is tight, controlled and articulate -- and is not bloated. There is no bright or warm character -- they are neutral. Drums sound really nice, along with the piano, guitar, trumpet, and violins. Voices are clean and clear and Jackie Evancho sounds good. Take Five with Dave Brubeck was nice -- Mission by YO YO MA sounded good. They did fine with rap, hip hop, Rock, and Jazz. Separation and detail is good. However, more higher end speakers will have better resolution. The speakers are not for head-bangers -- however they are also good for Home Theater and have some decent dynamics.

The Acousta Reed Panel is under the woofer and above the rear port. The inner wiring looks to be around 14 awg -- and there is plenty of fiberglass fill. The rubber surround on the woofer is thick.
