This mod is still in the experimental stage and the people doing the experimenting have the most knowledge... BTW, I appreciate the updates!

I don't think it would be wise to give a step-by-step 'how-to' for this mod just yet since it's still being developed.  If you don't understand the terms above, it probably isn't something you should try.  (not yet at least)

How I disagree
The doing and possible redoing is not the problem.
The terminology confuse me.
zenerdiodes  one? two? more? besides the 24 V property is there another property to reckon with? Or are they all the same except voltage?
shunt regulator well that is a very technical term

across, I suppose that is parallel to?

OK Gang,

Here's my thoughts on this mod.

There is an increase in resolution.  However, it is too aggressive and 'in your face' to my ears;  the essential musical flavour of the AKSA is partially lost, along with warmth.

The original configuration was set up to provide this 'warmth' and to keep turn-on and turn-off surges under control.  The mod, as espoused by David, and later modded by me with Ginger, is bold and brassy and aggressive, a little too in your face, and the turn on and turn off surge is very strong, threatening speaker drivers.

This is not to say development has stopped.  I believe this has potential, but it's bleeding edge stuff and will take some sorting out.  Thus development will continue, and only last night I emailed another mod to Ginger to consider which I will test bed today.  This stuff is like breeding elephants!!  If more resolution is available (not even sure we need it!!) then the race is on to deliver it without the turn on and turn off problems and to soften the delivery to taste, and restore warmth if possible.  This is all empirical stuff, takes time and heaps of patience.

My thanks to David and Ginger for their creativity and patience......

Kyrill, you can prepare sambal goreng petee dan udang for me anytime!  But please, not too hot;  my delicate Oz palate cannot handle the cabai which my wife eats so casually as snacks.  These little plutonium bullets send me at light speed towards garden hoses - the oriental love of hot foods is just incredible, it rips the soft tissue from my palate!!

Cheers,

Hugh

Ah, then Hugh would no doubt enjoy this little anecdote:

My previous neighbor had a penchant for grilling bell peppers, and occasionally--when affected by a tinge of machismo--jalepeno peppers.

Well, one day, I tossed him several of these little Asian firebombs and told him to knock himself out. When he asked me what sort of peppers they were, I told him to simply think of them as "mini-me" versions of jalepenos.

A little later, coming from over the fence, I heard a lot of shouting, yelling, and cries for water...

Any progress???

Hi guys,
Anyone progressed this further. I afraid I'm out of action - bloody termites have eaten half my workshop floor and I can't do much until the floor is replaced. At least 3 weeks away yet.

I'm still running 47R for D1, 2K2 for R10 with R5 connected to the junction of these.

The cleaning lady (my usual second opinion) likes it this way - I still feel its detail and dynamics are great BUT its COLD.

I'm taking the opportunity to do a sanity check and am cycling thru' all my power amps, Valve and Solid State a week at a time on each.

Dave/Hugh/Anyone - Any further progress?

Ginger,

No further progress.  I admit that when I heard it first time round without that legendary warmth, and then watched the crack of the voice coil at switchon/off, I realized there was some work ahead.

I am concentrating on more immediate projects at present;  the DAKSA and the GK1 retail (which is really getting closer).

I'm sorry.  My own personal demons prevent my working more than about 10 hours each day, though I do spend a couple of hours in quiet reading.

Those bloody termites.  I'm sorry to hear about it.  You can at least use high load compressed floor sheeting now, which is highly resistant to these critters.  It's easy to put in, too!  (That is, unless you have to replace all the bearers too, very likely I suspect).

Cheers,

Hugh

I have returned to the standard AKSA 100N (not plus) scheme!!!

I still have the VAS connected directly to the rail in my P61/AKSA55.

The pace and clarity of the 55 is superior, but I confess that I spend more time listening to the 100. If I could get the best of both worlds I would be a happy chappie!

Actually, for the last 2 weeks, I have been through one of my periodic audio neurosis episodes. The medicine involves subjecting myself to well reviewed commercial kit and this usually reassures me that my stuff is pretty damned good. It a risky business though, because one day I might find something that really is good and have to buy it. :o

I will experiment further with this tweak, but may well build a Leach amp first, in order to get another point of reference.

The Leach is the only option left that I can see for "king of the diy amps". I was dissapointed with the Aleph 5 I built, maybe I should try a JLH class A (although Destroyer X's pals thought the AKSA was better).

Cheers,

Dave

Sort of update

I did a full review of where my 55N+ is up to vs Hugh's 55N+ kit. I finally twigged that I had never done the power supply upgrade.

Last Friday night I sat down and replaced the old power supply board (Nippon Chemicon NMH electrolytic caps) with the new supply board with the new electrolytics. Results were wonderful.

It has been a long time since I achieved this level of performance increase with just a single mod. An entire layer of "haze" was removed. This will make it MUCH easier to assess further mods.

For those of you who have done upgrades of your own from the standard kit or the Nivarna kit I recommend you seriously consider getting the N+ power supply. Of course the serious improvement I noted may be partly due to the fact that my amp boards have the other N+ mods on them.

Christmas is 4 weeks away - treat yourself to a N+ upgrade

Cheers,
Ginger
