Converting a 28b from 120v to 220 240v
« on: 7 Feb 2017, 04:50 pm »
I just called Vermont and asked if they could swap a 28b that is 120v over to to 240v and the guy said no.  I was kinda dumb struck.  I'm buying 2 that are already 240 want the same for the third.  Did I call and talk to the wrong guy?  I just find it had that a 20 amp 120v service can supply enough juice for it.

It may depend on the version, but if the transformer doesn't have dual primary windings for 120V/240V, then transformer would need to be replaced.

Hi

Are you in the USA or Canada?  If so we only sell 120 volt in these 2 markets.  Where are you getting the 240V units?  Also there are 50Hz and 60Hz versions of the amps as well.

I'm in usa.  I'm buying 3 used 28bs. Which are also in usa.   2 are 240V 50-60hz  the other is a 120.  Would love to have all 3 at 240v.  Was gonna have the 120 shipped to bryston before I took ownership to have it switched.

HI- the 240V will probably be 50Hz not 60Hz - where are you getting them from - just concerned as we do not sell 240 into the US and the power supplies may be designed to operate in a different country?

Email me the serial numbers and I will check the history for you. - jamestanner@bryston.com

The 50Hz not 60Hz should have no problem in any way I can think of.
Now the REVERSE.. going from 60Hz TO 50HZ could have a problem.. yes. (particularly overheating of the transformer.)
But 50 to 60 nope.
Though if there are circuit protection devices they might have a possible but unlikely problem going from 50 up to 60Hz.

(I run all my digital stuff AC off a PS Audio P600 regenerator I have set to output 110Hz! Works great, and in fact plenty of power supplies work BETTER with a higher Hz on the AC line)
