Hello from Vancouver Island - Canada
« on: 16 Jan 2017, 08:34 pm »
Just joined the circle (after lurking for a while) and looking forward to learning. I'm new to this world (quality audio) and am excited to jump down the rabbit hole. Nothing much else to say at this point, beyond I am starting from almost 0, with no budget.  :duh:  Hoping to jump into DIY speakers (replacing 20 year old department store junk) this year, then into amps and sources next year.

Welcome Spencer :thumb:
On speakers Fullrange drivers are the most easy DIY loudspeakers to made due lack of xover and use just one sole driver.
You can buy a pair of fullranges and wait spare some cash.

Hi, Spencer.

Welcome to AC.

Vancouver Island is beautiful. We spent a couple weeks there two years ago.

Welcome left side dweller!

Great end of the country you have out there.

Welcome to the sweet spot. Sounds like we'll be meeting up in the 'Cheap n' Cheerful' forum. All us dollar-stretching skinflints are there. Buy used, choose carefully, and you can still put a satisfying system together for less than the cost of a German sports sedan.

Whoa! Thanks for the warm welcome, unexpected for sure.

Fullrangeman: why am I not surprised by your recommendation.     I have been eyeing up the GR Research speakers for years, I will be hard pressed not to buy into those speakers. We will see, the wife and I are still working towards an agreement of what is acceptable.

mresseguie: where are you from? I love living here. I really have no desire to ever leave. Funny story, I was in Hawaii for my honeymoon, and the first morning I was enjoying a coffee on the beach for sunset and a local stopped to say hi. I told her where I was from and she said they vacation here. Small world.

dB Cooper: I spent a crazy amount of time in that area today.  :D Lots of gold in there. There was a great post about wifi streaming (spotify) and it really got me thinking about sources. All I can say is man, that seems like an expensive, slippery slope.

Spencer,

I split my time between Oregon's Willamette Valley and Taiwan. The wife is Taiwanese.

We've been to Gabriola Island a few times.

PNW rocks!

Sorry for this delicate situation, if your room is big a FR driver is not suited, in this case look for hi sensitivity MTM or MT floorstanding, avoid subs and pocket speakers.
Good luck

Vancouver Island is my favorite place on earth.  Middle aged and I still never have met a grumpy Canadian.

My thoughts are this:  Trust only you ears.  Objective measurable data gives some information but subjective information from a sales person, forum chatter or formal reviews most likely will not resonate with your perception.  Sadly, I took me about 15K to learn this.  Always listen before purchasing, even for used equipment.  All systems are just that-- systems.  Synergy between components is very important and components may reveal flaws in other components.  Best investment is focusing on your listening environment.
