Hello from Chicago
« on: 10 Oct 2016, 06:46 pm »
Hello,

Been a silent member for a fair few years. Guess it's high time I came out of the closet...or the rack in this case

Been an audio hobbyist for over a decade now. Cycled through a myriad of setups over the years. The last setup I had was composed of a Lenco L75 with Linn LVX tonearm, Lehmann phono, Benchmark DAC2, Naim Nait 5i-2 and Harbeth SHL5. Sadly, I had to dismantle it when I moved from India to US a few months back.

Mainly listen to prog rock, classic rock and jazz. Not subscribed to any particular brand or design philosophy but tend to favor a warmer, tubey sound signature (coming from a single-driver/SET and Harbeth background). Source would be both digital and Vinyl.

Starting my quest all over again. This time I want to take my time going through my options and invest in building the system I'd want to settle down with. Looking to your comments, advice, suggestions and recommendations on what to look for and where...especially places in and around Chicago where I could check out a few setups

Thanks and cheers!

Another Chicagoan here. Good spots all over the city for checking out great gear. I'd check out Essential Audio, whose owner Brian Walsh is on AC from time to time. Saturday Audio Exchange and Decibel also carry some good lines of gear, and often have great used stuff too.

Also had some great meet-ups with other Chicagoans I've met here on AC.

Will check out the places you mentioned. Decibel carries Reference 3A  :thumb: :) They are very high on my list...

Any places in the NW subburbs?

Yeah, Decibel also has Harbeths and KEFs too, IIRC. Saturday has PSB, among others. Essential carries Audio Kinesis among others.

Not too familiar with NW suburbs, so no suggestions there. Here in Evanston, there is Audio Consultants. They have a few branches around Chicagoland.

And of course, AXPONA in April in Rosemont can't be missed!
