Record cleaning recipes
« on: 16 Sep 2016, 01:31 pm »
Hi folks,

I have a new VPI 16.5 and some cleaning fluids and a bunch of mildly dusty/dirty records. I also have a old spin and clean that I prefer not to use.

What is your process for cleaning records?
Do u use a home brew solution?

I am interested to know....

I use Audio Intelligent 3 step for every record, new or used, that comes into the house. Yes it's time consuming and generally a PIA, but nothing I've used, and that's about everything, is better. After about a year or so, depending on how many times it's been played, I use their No. 6 formula. I have quiet records and recommend their stuff highly.
The other day I cleaned a used Odetta album that was nearly 60yrs old. Admittedly, it was well kept, but it's as quiet as any other record I own, new or used.
For really dirty records, I use my Spin Clean first. No sense gumming up my 16.5

For many years I have been using  (for really dirty discs) either the Disc Doctor solution or AI solution #15-premium record cleaner, followed by AI solution one-step #6.  For routine cleaning I use the AI #6 alone.  I have a RCM many years old  (The Disc Doctor from Audio Advisor) and routinely replace the pads.  I apply and/or scrub the solutions by hand using MoFi cleaning brushes.

In most cases I am happy with the results.  All the cleaning in the world however, doesn't fix warps, scratches or a poor sound mix or performance (Sorry !)

Hope this is informative.
