R24 IS a carbon resistor. There's a reason for this!
A carbon resistor has an unmistakeable smell when pushed. This resistor is a bell weather item; it indicates if there is oscillation in the amplifier because of bad leads, horrific speaker load, whatever. We need something which will smell distinctly, and yet take a beating and hopefully survive. The metal film is less sensitive to this condition and doesn't smell so distinctly, and so I choose carbon just as Humphrey chose small birds to indicate gas in the coal mines.........
