Bryston BP26 noise floor?
« on: 4 Aug 2016, 08:28 pm »
Asking because it's significantly more noticeable when paired with accuphase P450 and tannoy GRF memory HE than my old 14B2 + PMC MB2i.

When I switch off the BP26 the background noise becomes inaudible .  And it's quite strange that even when I set the volume to minimum, i can still hear very faint sound in the speakers.

Could there be some slight gain issues or due to tannoy's high sensitivity (95dB) and coax design more prone to background noise?

Not a big deal since it's only audible at <~1m/3ft away but I'm still curious.

Hi

Yes the overall gain and the sensitivity of the speakers over the PMC's is the reason you hear the bit of hiss.

Thanks James , much appreciated.

Just one more quick question, there's a seperate ground connector on my tannoy, since there's no dedicated chassis ground point on bryston amps, can I simply clip the ground wire on one of the screws holding the metal case together?  Specifically on the PSU case for BP26 since it's more easily accessible?

Hi

Your speaker has a ground wire?

Quite interestingly yes, there's  a dedicated ground pin on the back of each speaker.(please see photo) I guess the scotch do things differently, and they recommend old fashion 1.5-2.5mm^2 solid core hard wires rather than the common braided litz speaker wires.

Ok that's a new one on me - give it a try and let me know.

That's a new one on me too!
Also a strange way to bi-wire.
Depending on how the 'Earth' terminal is connected inside the loudspeaker, things could get exciting with some amps. Moreso if different types of amps are used for the woofer and tweeter.

Indeed, the instruction manual is full of very interesting theories , especially on Bi-wiring , speaker wire recommendations and the curious ground connector .

Unfortunately all my spare speaker cables were too large to securitly fit into the ground connector , I'll buy a length of cheap wires and some 10AWG solid core wires tomorrow and see what happens. Curiously they clearly mentioned in the instructions that they do NOT recommend using speaker cables with braided / litz core . I always thought that most , if not all modern speaker cables were braided in some way.

I'll report back.
