Hello from Portsmouth Va
« on: 29 Jun 2016, 01:27 pm »
Hello, I came across this board in search of finding out opinions of people to help me in my situation.

I havent had a dedicated stereo in years. My last one was a Yamaha receiver and a pair of Klipsich bookends. I am starting school and find music helps me focus. I came up with a little extra scratch over the summer. I am heavily leaning towards the Audio Technica LP60. I want to grab a receiver and speakers as well. My budget is $450 after the LP60's $150 price tag at my local shop.

I also have a decent pair of headphones that I use for my computer (HyperX Cloud 2s) but if I just use the 3.5mm jack and not the USB the control goes out of them and they dont sound great.

I am not against used equipment at all. I just know that buying used can be tricky. I dont know all what to look for

Greetings & Welcome to AC gmm213    :thumb:  You might check out the Cheap & Cheerful circle for some recommendations on 'both bang for the buck' buys, and possibly some DIY stuff if you are so inclined.

Welcome!

If I were in your shoes I'd spend your $450 on something like an Audioquest Dragonfly USB DAC / headphone amp ($100-$150) into your computer and spend the rest on some new or used headphones ($300-$350). Oppo PM3 headphones would be a slight stretch ($399 new) but with the dragonfly worth it and would give you a taste of true high end sound.

A $150 turntable is a recipe for disappointment. You don't have to spend big bucks - eg a Pro-ject Debut Carbon is a great start but at $399 almost your whole budget - and doesn't include the extra cost for a phono preamp. A $150 audiotechnica TT / cart is just going to sound thin and nasty leaving you scratching your head about vinyls appeal and soured on it.

Aren't you glad you asked our opinion?
