A lot was said about the Dennis Murphy mod of the Pioneer.  The thread was very long.  Where is the thread on this new speaker a mod of BR-1 kit?  From Philharmonic Audio $195.00

Amazing price considering the stock kit cost. With the tweeter coverage down to 1700 that allays any worries about that cheaper woofer in the mids. Looks like a hell of a bargan.

I think because the thread started out about the Pioneer speaker then morphed into the mod Dennis did.  There was a lot of interest in the stock speaker, not so much in the BR1.  This new mod may end up being a better overall speaker for just a little more money.

I heard the Philharmonic Affordable Accuracy Monitor recently at the last two meetings my audio club hosted.  With just a couple of hours on them they struggled on some material and overall wasn't impressive.  So we told the owner to put some hours on them and bring them back.  With 60 hours on them they sounded much better, like good $200/pair speakers (way better IME than the stock Pioneers).  Still didn't measure up to my 13 year old $300/pair Ascend Acoustics CBM-170s.

I heard the modded Pioneers year before last at Capital Audiofest and they punched way above their weight against the other stuff in the AVA/Salk/Philharmonic room. Of course, they didn't equal the Salks and Phils, but they sounded quite respectable considering the gulf in cost. I hope Dennis brings a pair to CAF this summer.

The best little speaker I've heard lately is the JBL LSR305 ($300/pair, 2-way, fully active design).  Just add the $300 Meridian Explorer DAC and reportedly soon to be released MQA by Tidal for a killer little C&C system.
