100 W Nirvana PCBs

G'day all.
I'm in the process of doing a mock up of my case and want to know if anyone can tell me the sizes of:

Power PCB
Amp. PCB
Supplied heatsink.

Also, can you split the power PCB easily enough or should I keep my saw locked away.

I'm trying to fit 3 cahnnels in a standard case so I would rather do the stuffing around before the kits get here...

Thanks.

Hi SIS,

No problem - here are the dimensions:

Power PCB    126mm x 96mm  (this is close enough to 5" x 3.78")
Amp. PCB    125mm x 77mm  (each channel)  (5" x 3")
Supplied heatsink  300L x 45D x 75H  (11.8" x 1.77" x 2.95")

Yes, you can split the power supply pcb into two halves, one for each channel.  The dimensions then are 126mm x 47.5mm for each half with a 1mm cut width.

You can also cut the aluminium heatsinks in half, but they are 8mm thick at the base, and this requires quite a bit of effort, particularly the finishing after the cut.  You might be better advised to use a 100mm tall heatsink rather than the 75mm supplied;  this will cost a little more, but should mean you can build a case with a heatsink on each side but adequate cooling for three channel.  I must stress that you can't be too careful cooling an amplifier;  ambient temperatures are high at Mt Newman and too much heat at high power, specifically into low impedance speakers, will kill an amplifier fairly quickly.

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers,

Hugh

Thanks Hugh,
Hot in Newman? It looks like more rain today..
I have two heatsinks I bought from altronics. I was going to use these out either side for the stereo pair and the supplied hs internally for the centre channel. Do you think this would be alright...

Thanks..

Hugh.
Ive finally cottoned on.   I typed my reply without realy taking note of the sizes, got to work, and realised the heatsinks are the same size as the ones I bought. Mental note to self, dont assume sizes, check first.. I didnt realise the PCBs are that big. :o

Anyone want some cheap heatsinks... I'm gonna have fun explaining this one to the missus... :D

Hi SIS (you really should give us your name!!),

Yes, exactly the same heatsink, comes from the same factory, the manufacturer is a close friend......

If you use three in this way, then all is hunky dory, but you will need to cut ventilation slots at the base of the box to cool that internal heatsink.  Aside from that requirement you've also got to fit in three large toroids and so height will also be a factor.   You'll need at least 110mm of height.  However, a 100mm tall heatsink would enable just two sinks, which does have advantages, but if you are creative with configuring the parts you might be able to accommodate all three without too much trouble.

Cheers,

Hugh

Hugh,
Much as I try, I just can't imagine fitting a heatsink into a stanardish enclosure. If I were to manage that I would have to change my nickname to Doctor Who!

When I do order, I will be going the 100mm heatsinks, I assume (there I go again!!) they are the same width and length as the standards.

Thanks,
Martin

Ah, Martin,

Thank you for entrusting us with your name!  I promise, we will be gentle with it.......  Such a good name, my friend, you could be French!

The 100mm will be a special order from Conrad, so give me a few days to get them.

Cheers,

Hugh
