Super 3 Desktops for mid-sized room?
« on: 25 May 2016, 11:38 pm »
Greetings!
I'd be curious to know whether the Super 3 Desktop speakers would be a good fit for my living room if I chose to go down the SET path...
My current speakers are KEF LS50 driven by a PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium integrated. I have a REL sub to augment the low-end.
The configuration of my living room is far from ideal, but it works.  The speakers are mounted in built-in shelving on either side of a large picture window - approximately 12 feet apart.  The speakers are on Isoacoustics stands with the reflex ports plugged.  I chose the LS50s in part because of their broad dispersion characteristics, which I felt would help mitigate the effect of having the speakers so far apart.
I've recently begun toying with the idea of building a SET amp - perhaps a Bottlehead Kaiju or the like.  This led me to wonder what speakers would pair well with in in my room.  My search  for efficient monitors led me to Omega.  My built-in shelves are set about 14" apart, so only a very small monitor like the Super 3 Desktop will fit... See the attached picture.

How would these monitors fair in my set-up?
Thanks,
Mika

Hello mwaller, and welcome to the Omega AudioCircle.

It would help to see a bigger picture.  As far as Omega speakers go, Louis could do a custom with larger cabinet volume than the Super 3 Desktop that would fit on your shelf.  Something with a side or front port.  I suggest calling him and discussing it.  He's super friendly and super helpful.

Hi mwaller,

Many thanks for your post and Super 3's will work great. Canada Rob is right and looks like a custom would be the best way to go. I for sure would want to front port the speakers. The dispersion of the RS5's are excellent and I have a similar setup in my house. The stands are great and you can run the Bottlehead with no worry.

Thanks again,
Louis

Its unfortunate that you have to place the speakers like that.  Like Louis said, you definitely want something front ported.

If you read my review in the review circle, I too had the LS50.  The RS5 speaker replaced it within hours upon arrival.   Dispersion is at least as good as the LS50 which does have excellent dispersion. It is faster in the transients and more resolved to my ears.  Having a sub does help with the low end and fill out the mids.  If your budget allows, you may want to consider a 1.5 setup with two RS5 per cabinet.  I have not had the pleasure of listening to a 1.5 but I do have a dual RS5 bipole and they significantly outperform the already excellent single RS5.

Literally if I had to choose between a single RS5 Omega and a KEF LS50, the choice for me personally is a simple one. Dual RS5 goes beyond the single RS5 significantly.

I believe that there are others on this board who also have experience with single and dual RS5 who will have the same observation.  Regardless of how you go, I believe that the RS5 will be an improvement - especially with a low powered SET amp.

Mika appears not to have stayed around long enough to read the first reply.

Hi Ultralight,

Thanks and I've been spending a lot time on the duals lately especially RS5's. I'm working on a new standmount version right now and a floorstander next. Both are 1.5 ways. They are going to look more modern in proportion.

The omni's and the bipoles will also be available as Outlaws.

Thanks again,
Louis
