Mmm MMG
« on: 18 Apr 2016, 03:06 pm »
Man, I am so excited for my new amp (Stratos/Kismet in Khartago) to be finished. Until it comes in, my Basis 1400 and Audio Research preamp are just sitting there. However, my Maggies are at their four month mark of break in, and I can't believe they sound so good. And this is pinch hitting with Spotify from an iPhone, a cheap Bluetooth receiver through an underpowered Yamaha HT, a thrift store Polk passive sub and zip cord!
Once the new amp and cables from Klaus are in the system, I'll probably trade up the MMGs to the 1.7. If they are anything close to my old 1.6, I believe I'll be in heaven. Maybe a Candela and a good sub down the road.  That reminds me, I gotta get that voltage reading for Klaus.

Thanks for your responses. Did you guys go with the cable Klaus carries or something else. Not sure I can afford it as I see no pricing anywhere.

Get the cables.  They are reasonable in terms of price but really outperformed Kimber interconnect I had. I would also get the speaker cables from klaus as well.  Like the interconnects, the Groneberg cables outperformed any other cable I have ever had in my system. You are in for a really nice treat!  Best regards, Al

I have a complete odyssey setup including liquids, candela, stratus mono blocks, Suspiro se, all Groneberg interconnects, TS speaker cables. The sound is amazing. I had used several other brands but by far the complete set of Groneberg is great. The cost is reasonable compare to other big brands.

Ive been running my Maggie 1.6QRs with a Stratos Stereo amp for over three years now. Never a hiccup. Klaus talked me into the Groneburg Speaker cables as well.  I just used them from day one and have never used anything else,so I can't compare/contrast with any other brand. I believe there is really good symbiosis between Odyssey and Magneplanars.

I'm a little concerned. The Stratos Kismit in Khartago arrived and it's beautiful. However in using it with MMG and the Quattro Reference cables and on certain tracks I'm getting bass slap from the MMG. I tried moving about but it's still happening on occasion. The MMGs. Are just hitting 100 hrs and opened up considerably. There is no control to attenuate bass on my ARC Sp-9 III.. The amp has only been on 30 hours or so. Is this the Jeckyl and Hyde that the amp goes through?

How loud are you playing them?

I'll check in the morning. I think around 85db. They have a problem on this Diana Krall track 'All or Nothing At All' The plucked bass sends the Maggie into a slap. Maybe I'm trying to crank it because it's so clean, such a good recording. I don't recall having this problem with the 1.6s

I get some distortion at high volumes on high-pitched frequencies on my Magnepan 3.7 and Kismet in Stratos monos.  It could be the speaker though because it only comes out of my right speaker.  The most obvious track is Adele's Hello.

If you are hearing a slapping of some kind, and it is happening only with specific tracks, I would suspect the dreaded "banana peel".

A decent DIY project, and by all standards more time consuming than actually difficult.  Mostly due to the removal of the many staples to remove the sock.

I hear no such issues with my 1.6's.  I don't ever play over an iPhone indicated 92db (typical for me is 83-88db).

I sold a set of MMG and the new owner claimed that he had to do the banana peel fix.  I gave him back 1/2 the $.  I never had a hiccup with the MMG's myself.

I wanted to clarify my comments re: bass slap on the MMG. I revisited the particular track and had a db meter at my listening position and found that there were peaks of 95db on the track, clearly pushing the speaker beyond its capabilities, particularly in stock form and not fully broken in. I'm also unfairly comparing them to my previous speakers the 1.6, which were in a much better proportioned room, well out from the walls.  I wanted to be clear that I am not commenting on the amplifier, which has only been here and turned on three days. I promised myself not to review the amp unless I can do so once fully broken in.

Update: Today things are settling in nicely, the system sounds relaxed and open. I'm spinning some of the Music Matters Blue Note 45s and The Ray Brown Trio - Soular Energy. I can say with the latter set I had no bass problems at all. I think the attention to details has helped overcome some problems.
