Question about tubes running hours
« on: 17 Mar 2016, 01:32 am »
I'm new to the tubes world and when I bought my amplifier the seller told me not to run it for more than 8 hours, letting it for rest a couple hours before the next listening session. I wasn't told why, but now I got curious and I want to know more about it.
What's the reason for this limitation? What can we damage and why?

I've run a lot of tubes a lot more consecutive hours than eight. I've never had a problem of any kind. What amplifier do you have?

Have fun,

Jerry

  • To whom more was given more will be required.

There is 2 parts here, the amp and the tubes.
Amp: most amps cant run around the clock, how much is the limit? The amp builder should say.

Tubes: When the getter is activated at the tube factory it keep working about 6 months only if the tube in not heated, after it the getter go to sleep and decades ahead the tube will be used w/the getter inactive.

So now the getter should be activated again gently, but the tube dealers dont do it, and for this reason he told you to use the amp some hours per day, doing it you are activating the getter and cleaning the gas built inside the tube all these years.

This is a erroneous procedure, the correct getter reactivation arent in a amp, but in a tube heater, as in case the tube fail catastrophically your expensive amp+speaker will not be damaged.
So be aware that you are taking a risk doing this.
