4Bsst2 no ground lift switch?
« on: 21 Mar 2016, 10:49 pm »
my former 4bst had a Ground Lift Switch on the rear panel which fixed two problems I was having, 1) slight hum in speakers, 2) When I turn on my ceiling fan using a 3-step wall switch I get a slight pause in power to the amp.  Now with my new 4BSST2 I don't have any hum but I am getting the pause (voltage drop) to the amp.  There is no GLS on the SST2, any solutions????

Hi

The new safety standards do not allow a ground lift switch any longer.

Thanks James, any suggestion on eliminating the voltage drop?  Amp is plugged directly in to wall socket.

Hi

Maybe run a dedicated power circuit just for your audio system if that is possible?

The other option would be some sort of voltage regulation like in the Bryston BIT AVR but that would be an expensive solution.

When was new?
I thought UL standards were that way for decades? (but I'll check)

The only approval I'm seeing printed on the rear panel of Bryston amplifiers in the CE mark, which is required to sell in the European Economic Area.  If they also have UL or CSA approval, I'm not seeing it on the rear panel.

As you know, UL and CSA are voluntary certifications here in North America, so many small boutique manufacturers do not get them and/or can't afford to get them.  Since many of them are selling Internet Direct (and aren't selling to government agencies, large distributors, Costco, Walmart, Target, etc.) they can go without them, albeit with greater liability should any safety litigation arise.

It was mentioned that there was another ground lift switch topic raised in a boutique manufacturer's circle, but they could very well have the switches as it wouldn't limit or have any effect on their one-to-one direct to consumer sales model.
