Blend Switch
« on: 26 Jan 2016, 10:24 pm »
Am building a Super Pas and have run into the blend switch problem. Thought my old Dynaco blend switch was good, but it is toast. The old blend switches are unobtainable. I have seen mention here about bypassing the blend switch or using alternatives, but not much info. So what is one to do without a blend switch? Seems a shame to be stuck in the rebuild for one unobtainable part. Any ideas about alternatives would be appreciated.

Thanks much.

I would call Frank at 651-330-9871.  He would be glad to help.

Dean, thanks much for the suggestion. I have thought about that, but was figuring given, as the late, great Bill Thomas once said, the blend switch is made of "unobtainium" there would be others in the same situation. I certainly have seen references to it on the net. Folks just doing the normal Dynaco tweaks/rebuild as I have done several times, ditch the blend switch. I believe Bill did that on several of his rebuilds...Although he definitely kept it for one. The Van Alstine Super Pas where Frank has cleverly used it to add some needed features to the PAS. What was seemingly no longer necessary or rarely used is now is essential. I figured Frank was/has/would be getting calls on this, so it seemed like a problem that needed to be on the net. My only wonder at this point is that those circuits are proprietary and given the tendency of the Chinese to churn out circuit boards etc. for everything, perhaps Frank would rather not have an answer on the net but incorporate something into his future plan sheets. I noticed in one of his posts on the Super PAS he mentioned going over one and having to junk the blend switch, so he must have an alternate solution. If nothing else I can post here that that is obtainable from AVA. I honestly think more folks might undertake this rebuild if there was an alternative to finding a blend switch. Maybe I need to ponder the schematic a little more.

Take care.

We don't have a good replacement for the PAS blend switch but if you can call me at 651-330-9871 I can suggest a workaround.

Thanks Heiba,

I had forgotten that I posted that info on a replacement switch.

Oldguide, I can help you out if you want to go forward with using the ElectroSwitch as a replacement. It's fairly easy to wire it up to perform the blend function.

`...important low pass filter built on the blend switch` - see:

It`s quite easy to hear the difference, so keep the filter there on the blend switch.

Where else but AVA would you have the owner himself return your phone call and take the time to walk you through what needs to be done. AVA you now have another convert. Since the circuitry is copyrighted I cannot post the solution other than to say if you already have the instruction sheet you can probably figure it out from the schematic. A big plus for customer service which is the one ingredient a lot of so-called high end companies leave out. As the commercial used to say, "Priceless." Having worked on a fair number of PAS preamps this is my first shot at the AVA version. I will report on the results. The circuitry intrigues me as this is a design I have not seen before.

Thanks also to everyone who took the time to reply!
