Need Computer Advice
« on: 13 Jan 2016, 11:44 pm »
When I loaded J River on to my laptop computer I burned many CD's to an external hard drive, which the computer then recognized as the D: drive. Now I connect the same hard drive to the same USB port, and the computer recognizes it as the E: drive, and J River doesn't recognize E: as the path to the music. Suggestions?

You "ripped" them.  ;)

I'm not sure why your drive letter changed (you obviously don't have an optical drive which would normally be D:, after the main drive C:) but perhaps you have a USB thumb drive or card reader inserted which is now D: and the external USB hard drive is now E:?

If that's not the case and you don't have an existing D: drive, you can go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management, right-click on the USB hard drive and select "Change Drive Letter & Paths" and change it back to D:

You could also remove all the selections from your library and change the J.River Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Configure auto-import and have it monitor drive E:, but you probably don't need to do that if you can simply change the drive letter back to what it should be.

We're getting closer to solving the problem. When I attempt to reassign the drive letter D: to the external hard drive this message appears: "The drive letter D: is already mapped to a network share or a local path. In order to see the volume after the operation, you must remove current mapping. Do you want to continue?"

Do I want to continue?

Is there a D: drive that shows in My Computer, Computer or Windows Explorer, whether an actual physical drive, a partition of the main hard drive or a network share mapped as a drive?

If so, you can change that drive's letter to something else, then you can assign D: to your USB hard drive.  If not, then just "continue" and assign D: to your USB hard drive, replacing the "phantom" drive mapping of D:

No D: drive was showing, so I reassigned the external hard drive to D:, and J River is now able to access all the music. Thanks for the help!  :thumb:
