2B LP Pro wiring
« on: 16 Dec 2015, 04:12 am »
I have a 2B LP Pro which I want to use in a small system away from my main system, it sounds good with a balanced connector however I would also like to use it with single ended devices (via RCA connector), I've heard that using the 2B this way should be fine with an appropriate adaptor.

Does Bryston condone this? I mean this isn't harming the system by feeding it a single ended input?

And secondly there are many diagrams how the adapter should be made, the two most common being below. Which way is the recommended way to make this adapter? Thanks

Those two arrangements in the diagram are functionally the same.

The best way would be to use a transformer. Simplest is to purchase a DI box from a guitar center (Radial JDI Stereo or JDI Duplex are pretty good, though pricey)

This is a better reference when you start fiddling with adapters:

If feeding RCA into XLR, then the rca tip goes to pin2 and the rca sleeve goes to pin3, connect pin1 to the cable shield but float it at the rca end.
If going from XLR to RCA... ugh just don't. Most of the time you'll luck out because both halves of the "balanced" outputs happen to be symmetrical around 0V (or the negative simply sits at 0V), but in the rare case that this isn't the case, floating pin3 is going to give you bad mojo.

The very reasonably priced Monoprice XLR to RCA work perfectly.

I also use a pair of these, female XLR to RCA, on the end of a pair of 35’ XLR from my AVP (single ended) to my 2BLP pro powering some surrounds.

Thanks guys, I'm trying to keep it simple so I think I'll go the cable route.
