Playing DSD files on Exogal Comet
« on: 18 Nov 2015, 11:48 pm »
I just purchased an Exogal Comet and I was testing to hear how a DSD file would sound.  I tried all combinations of settings in JRiver MC20 and I only get static when I try to play a DSD file.  I have Windows 7 Pro OS and JRiver MC20.  Can anyone tell me what settings they have used with success?

The Comet does not support DSD natively. You will have set up jRiver to playback DSD via DoP. Try going into Tools, playback options, Audio Device, Device Settings. Check the box under Output, DSD streaming in DoP format. This might work.
The Comet converts DSD to PCM internally (DSD64 converts to 176.4kHz and DSD128 converts to 352.8kHz).

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried that option both with and without the 24-bit option (without success).  I also tried to set the DSD bitstream option (without success).  I also tried to output the stream as DSD over DoP and DSDx2 over DoP (without success).  The output as DSD over DoP does not seem like a viable option since it just converts all output to DSD.

Are others having MC20 convert the DSD to PCM and send PCM to the DAC?

I think you need to go to 'Tools,' then 'Audio' and under DSP and output settings set-up how JRiver plays back files over 192kHz (e.g. 176.4)

Check out some of Ted's videos:

Thanks, I read lots of posts from Ted and he is a great help.

Phil, You were correct it was my settings in DSP over 192kHz.

For the benefit of others here are the settings I found to work where JRiver can automatically play PCM or DSD on the Comet.  This is based on leaving bit rates at their native settings but you can up-sample rates below 192kHz if that is your preference.

Go into 'Tools' then 'Options' then 'Audio' then 'Audio Device' then 'Device Settings...' and mark the following check boxes in the Output section:

  • Device uses only most significant 24-bits (Lynx, etc.)
  • DSD bitstream in DoP format

Go into 'Tools' then 'Options' then 'Audio' then 'Settings' then 'DSP & output format...'

Output Encoding: Select "None" in the list.
Sample rate: Set all rates to "No Change" and set all rates above 192,000 Hz to 176,400 Hz

Go into 'Tools' then 'Options' then 'Audio' then 'Settings' then 'Bitstreaming' and select "None" in the list.
