Have you taken a look at the SEOS speaker kits on http://www.diysoundgroup.com/? There is a ton of info on AVSforum about them and I personally had a bit to do with the waveguide design. They are inspired by some of the most innovative speaker designs to come out in the last two decades, namely Gedlee's line (Summa, Abbey, etc), Wayne's Pi Speaker kits, Duke's Audiokinesis speakers. They have the box checked in dynamics and they do constant directivity (controlled dispersion) very well making them good in typical rooms which is oft overlooked.
Welcome! Check out the "Cheap and Cheerful" section--lot's of innovative and inexpensive approaches to be explored.
You mention three things that might lead me to make a suggestion. First, you said you love prog rock; me too, love prog rock and metal which are what I listen to most of the time. That means dynamics are a necessity for real enjoyment, 6 1/2" two way speakers can be eliminated from the list IMO. Second, you mention speaker building. Third and likely related to the second you mention budget.Have you taken a look at the SEOS speaker kits on http://www.diysoundgroup.com/?
