Music Server Connections HDMI or USB

Why would one be a better choice to connect to DAC ? Or is a SPDIF adapter for USB preferred ? HDMI makes good sense to me but what to you gents think ?

You probably won't find a external DAC with  a HDMI input.
It is AES/EBU, SPDIF or USB.

If you are using a receiver, you probably can go the HDMI way assumning your source supports this.

HDMI doesn't have a good reputation SQ wise but the info I have is a bit dated
