Cheap and Cheerful System at Burning Amp Event
« on: 25 Oct 2015, 07:48 pm »
Last weekend I participated in the Burning Amp event in Redwood City, California. Along with my Bottlehead set up I also demonstrated a "cheap and cheerful" system which consisted of a TPA7297 amp, Sony Playstation 1 and a pair of Braun Output C speakers. The TPA has been recapped, the Playstation was stock and the Output C speakers crossovers recapped and all drivers rebuilt. When people saw the setup everyone smiled, and after they heard it the smiles got even larger. I received a lot of complements on how nice it sounded.

Similar to my $100 system which consists of a Playstation, 6n3 tube preamp, TPA3116 and Dayton speakers.  The SCPH 5501 and B652's are modded.

For me it's a challenge to see what can be accomplished on a shoe string. One could spend hundreds more yet not get better performance.

The only used item is the PS1 and they can be found for $5 at most flea markets.

Parts Express Dayton speakers $39 a pair but mine were on sale for $34

6n3 tube preamp is $39 on ebay

TPA3116 is $10 ( eBay ) + an $8 lap top power supply (Amazon )

I've tried similar things with PS-1 and TPA3116 where the goal was audiophile quality system for under $200. Speaker and enclosure cost is the biggest issue...
