Hi everyone,

I currently have music files on a 4tb external hard drive housed in a Vantec Nexstar Aluminum Case which keeps the temperature around 40 to 42 Celsius, occasionally running as high as 44 if I'm transferring a lot of files. I'm needing to expand my storage, so I'm wondering, what is the ideal range of operating temperatures for an external hard drive? What external hard drive enclosures do you recommend?

Thank you.

Pretty typical for electronics is 20-30*F over ambient.  If you're within that range you're safe and slightly higher isn't going to kill them really.

I have the same case and a 4TB WD Red HD.  Unfortunately that case has a plastic tray inside as opposed to metal.  Metal would be a better heat sink.  I have been thinking about drilling a few holes in the plastic case for better air flow.
