I have a Sony camera that came with software that stopped working not long after the install (Windows 7 Pro).  Like you, I just remove the SD card as well

My Sony DCS-H50 uses the Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo, which looks just like an SD card but measures just enough to not fit any reader. But this camera is old enough to have come with a USB card adapter. So I just pop the Memory Stick out of the camera and plug it into a USB stick. Then into my computer. Bingo pix and video ready for viewing , transferring or deleting. Not a high end item but it does have an articulating back, which I like for car shows.  :thumb:
