Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron

Well, what does everyone think by now?  Overall I enjoyed it. If I wasn't a comic book geek though I'd have liked it less.  For me the thrill of seeing the characters pop off the pages of the books still gets me giddy! :thumb:  A few negatives (not much for spoilers but skip this if you simply can't bear to hear anything at all!).  First the romance between Natasha/Black Widow and Banner seemed really forced to me.  There's nothing in any of their previous onscreen encounters that showed an spark me.  Now Widow and Cap, there was a little electricity between them.  Even her and Barton you could see (if not for his wife).  So it seems more like a plot device than an organic development.  Also, Ultron was really lame.  Spader did an awesome job, don't get me wrong.  His Ultron was creepy and funny at the same time, and he had some great lines.  But he wound up not being very powerful or threatening.  Worse yet it wound up being the same thing as Avengers 1; instead of an army of faceless alien/bots we got an army of faceless Ultron bots.  That was a bit disappointing.

But the Vision was awesome!  It was great to see him onscreen and very well done.  They captured his eerie grace very well, although I was disappointed to not see him using his ability to become insubstantial (note- someone told me he briefly did this while fighting a robot but if so it was too quick for me to see).  The writing was good and the characters banter was great.  You finally get a sense of them being "family" of a sort.  Thor got some terrific lines and Hawkeye finally got a chance to shine.  Scarlet Witch was well done IMO and was portrayed very well by Olson.

To me the battle between Stark in the Hulk Buster armor and ol' Green was worth the entire price of the ticket! :thumb:  They masterfully captured the feel of the comic book fights!

Overall not as fresh as the first one but still well worth it, especially for comic book nerds. :thumb:

I enjoyed it. I think the film is as good as it can be given all the marks it has to hit setting up for the rest of the marvel movies coming. Someone said it's kind of Two Towers of the marvel universe and I think that's true. Not only in terms of being a bridge film but also in the sense that there's an hour's worth of footage cut from the film and I bet that footage will flesh the film out. The cut as it is tries to cover too much ground with not enough time.

For the same reason I don't really consider this a whedon film. The director's cut maybe but this cut is all marvel imo. I'm glad whedon is moving on. He's too strong a voice to fit in the machine.

Some voices need total control to show their genius.

Next week one of those geniuses will show the world what a REAL action movie is all about. Avengers will be a dim memory after that.
