I bought this amp to try against my much loved Pass INT-30A, because I was frustrated with the limitations the 30 wpc Pass imposes on speaker choices.
The amps, which hit about the same pricepoint, are in my estimation very close.
The MF is tauter, faster, and more detailed, with more dramatic dynamics and more authority down low.
In short, I judge it exceeds the Pass on numerous dimensions that enthusiasts care about, and I could easily see many audiophiles preferring it, overall.
It does not exceed the Pass on what Pass calls “class-A yumminess.” While the MF is by no means lean, the Pass is a bit warmer and more romantic (some might say syrupy).
For the music I listen to – mostly female vocal, especially singer songwriters – the Pass makes a slightly better fit. And since I’ve now lucked into fairly high efficiency speakers (Daedalus Ulysses ☺) that sound very good with the Pass, especially at my lower listening volumes, I’m less worried about flexibility.
But if you are worried about flexibility (as you travel the speaker trail), have less efficient speakers, like big music, or higher volumes, the Musical Fidelity could be the amp for you. If you’re looking to simplify from separates (I never looked back!) but worry about having enough grunt, the Musical Fidelity could also be the amp for you.
Really, I’d call the comparison with the Pass a toss up. I’d love to keep the MF, and will probably regret selling, but I can’t presently justify having two expensive integrateds on hand.
I’d call the MF’s condition an Audiogon 8. I am the second owner, but have had it for only a couple of months, and used it very sparingly, and never at high volumes. There are a couple of light marks on the top plate; thin lines where the finish is slightly burnished, not readily visible without a “nose on” inspection. You’d have to be very fussy, I think, to care much about these (the worst can just be made out in the top right quadrant of the pic of of the unit's top). Also, from online photographs, it looks like the amp ships with plugs in the binding posts (to frustrate peple with banana cables); these are not present for 4 posts on this unit. Overall, in very good shape, quite worthy of “pride of ownership.” Certainly a strong purchase for the offered price.
