Lots of problems trying to backup CDs with BDP-2
« on: 11 Jul 2015, 07:19 pm »
Admittedly I'm not using a BOT, but another BD drive connected via Esata.  but I'm getting numerous problems that don't seem drive-related;

Clicking "Backup" in browser results in no action, but clicking pause from front panel does initiate backup

Despite saving my internal SSD as the default destination via the browser, the subsequent backup may go to that drive or to a remote NAS seemingly at random.

Drive then reads CD OK, however, backup process then hangs  typically at the point where  some files are either encoding but not yet encoded or encoded but not yet completed.

For completed files, clicking the > play symbol does nothing (row in listing  is just highlighted in blue but nothing else happens)

Very frustrating so far.  At the moment the backup  feature seems some way off reliable useability , or am I doing something wrong?

Chosen format is FLAC and I get the same problems ripping to internal SSD or NAS.

CD playback  from this drive via the BDP is 100% reliable.

Hi

I am using a BOT of course with no issues. Will leave for Chris to answer.

After a few more attempts the problems summarise:

Backup from front panel always starts OK  but ignores destination saved via browser.

Clicking backup from browser sometimes works,  sometimes does nothing.  Browser also loses metadata listing of CD unless you move to backup quickly.  I thought this could be a browser problem ( as I also can't see an artist view at all in media player pane) but this happens both in Safari on IPad and Firefox on PC.

Regardless of how backup is initiated, once the CD ejects, I'm usually left with the cover art and some encoded (Flac) and tagged tracks in the intended album folder, and the the remaining tracks encoded but not tagged left in a tmp folder.  Sometimes no album folder is created and all tracks remain encoded but not tagged in the tmp folder.  Other times two different named folders are created ( e.g. extra space in title) the cover art in one and the music  files in the other, or the cover art is just  copied into root of destination disk.

Can't play or add completed files during backup (clicking > or + just highlights whole entry in blue with no result)

Obviously not the end of the world  and can be sorted by editing afterwards, but not the "click and forget" process I had imagined.

Hi Norton

I do not have any of those issues with the BOT1 other than finding some obscure album art but we are working on that.

Most of the problems seem to stem from what happens after the CD has been read, or differ between browser and front panel  interfaces, so (unless I've misunderstood what it does) I'm not convinced my issues would go away by getting a BOT.

I am using the latest Beta of MM though, any known problems with ripping?

As an aside I haven't had a single case of correct album art (all Classical) retrieved so far (used URL lookup instead).

It's not a huge deal for me, I didn't  buy the BDP for ripping, but I can now see the advantage of having a simple backup feature in situ, rather than having to use EAC on my PC.  Once sorted the BDP rips do sound very good too.

HI Norton,

Exactly my experience in ripping lots of classical cd's, no match or very complicated wrong ones.... Many sources available through a comfortable pc/mac solution are still very much needed.

Im on a Mac using XLD mostly, an only recently learned that is can read the tags iTunes gets perfectly most of the time using gracenote.

Which was one of the reasons i've asked before if the BOT couldn't be fit with an ethernet interface for it to be found by the network / pc / mac. Or even better, attached to a mac/pc and be found on the network by the bop.

That way one could have the goods of both worlds. Rip with all options and ease of use of a computer, not necessarily close to the BDP but close to one's library, and still play directly when a cd is inserted. Have the BOT use iTunes....

O well, don't know if the 1300 $ Bot will reward us with its difficult interface and use just yet.

Thanks and please keep experimenting and tell us about it.
