I thought this article might prove interesting but I didn't know just where to put a link to it.
It deals with using Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables in audio applications, specifically as a superior replacement for the standard mic cable that might ordinarily be used in most instances.

Just be careful with them for things like speaker cables. I tried that years ago, braiding 3 of these together and twisting together the solids, for +, and the striped, for -. It sounded OK for my modest home theater system. But with a bit of time I heard the smearing from the slightly different twist per inch of wire on each pair when I tried them on my main music rig.

I spent many hours building a set as well and they were very disappointing.  Not sure if it was smearing due to lengths, but I moved on pretty quickly.

The  'The Strange World of Cat 5e and Cat 6' blog was written by Steve Lampen of Belden Cable. Over the years he has written two excellent books on audio/video wires and cables.

"Wire, Cable, and Fiber Optics for Video & Audio Engineers" 1998

"Audio/Video Cable Installers Pocket Guide" 2002

by Stephen H. Lampen

But the blog was written only about balanced analog interconnect systems and dynamic mic cables.

I would know that if I'd read the blog BEFORE commenting  :duh:

Just read the blog.  Interesting.  Ignore my comment on speaker cables--totally irrelevant.  Back to your regularly scheduled broadcast.

Now that you found the Steve Lampen blogs, go back and look at some of his othr blog pages. He now has over 100 pages ans some are very interesting (hi-fi wise)(while others are way off topic).

We tried that. As we used fewer pairs things got better. We now use a single pr of wires pulled from the bundle.
