VR4 SR Mk II - used prices
« on: 10 Apr 2015, 04:37 pm »
Has anyone sold/bought any VR4 SR Mk II recently? Am wondering what the market price is for a 6 year old in excellent condition. Was quoted 6k plus shipping, is that reasonable?
Many thanks for your input.

What I can tell you is that having lived with that Model for many years, it is a wonderful speaker with great WAF. If they are truly in great cosmetic and mechanical shape, it sounds like a good price to me but I would not a trader looking for bottom dollar ( like a car auctioner), rather a person looking for value which would make me happy for a good while. Also next up the line would be VR5 and I have been following those more closely and they can go from about 12K to 18k (for MK2 Anniversary) used. When I listed my Annis for$18,500 recently I had several offers within a day and no low ballers. Hope this helps.

I think it is a fair price too. If the speakers happen to be African Hazlewood or Ebony then even better.

There is another reason though IMO only. I think that outside of the current 44 the Mk2 was/is my favorite SR. I owned all three and still own the Mk3. Why? While not as transparent as the Mk3, it was forgiving rather than veiled. This allowed it to be used with a wider array of amplification. In other words, you didn't need to spend too much or be as picky with amps as the Mk1 (could peak in the upper mids with so-so solid state amps) or the MK3 whose air-cooled ring-dome was not tolerant of harshness in sources and amps. Ultimately the Mk3 has more potential but much more work is required to unlock it.
