Denon clearance
« on: 11 Mar 2015, 02:31 pm »
My local Denon distributor is clearing out last year's models.  They have a couple of receivers, the AVRX3000 and 4000 along with some headphones and their headphone amp/DAC all at half price while they last.  Anyone have interest?  This is very much a "while they last" thing.  This is really for my local guys here because I can't ship these by dealer agreement.  You can PM me if you have questions.

Bob,
I tried to delete this to move it to the Flea market but I can't seem to delete it.

I lied.
I can't merge it with another topic, but I think it's probably alright here.

I hate to be a party pooper but their headphones are not worth even half retail. Fostex was the makers of the denon d-2000 to d-7000 headphones and fostex continued that with the th-600 and 900 not denon. I saw the th-600 pretty cheap at razordog. The other items I do not know about but yeah I would still avoid the headphones even at half price.

Ok, here we go with the trolls.

Jibzilla, I have no idea who you are and apparently you don't know me, but I offer this up to save my audio club some money if they were in the market for any of these items.  Do you go on other manufacturer and club threads and crap all over their products? Not sure why I asked that since that is the perfect definition of a troll.   Everyone is welcome to their opinion and I'm well aware that most would not consider Denon audiophile quality yet they may have need for a bluetooth speaker for their office at half price or a receiver with 3 HDMI outputs for over $600 off list.

Clearly you are thrilled to be the party-pooper.  Be constructive and have something to offer when replying to me or go f yourself.  The models of headphone that you listed in your posting were not even on the list of what I could get on clearance but you didn't ask that before your comment.  I'm tired of bitter clowns like you with nothing better to do then look down their nose at anyone other than themselves.

Well, since you're both local boys, this should get interesting if you two are ever in the same room together.

.....that awkward moment when they're introduced to each other and their expressions go blank.

Most of the headphones offered are closer to the earbud variety and such.  Models that are on their clearance list are the AHC250, 300 and 400, the AHD340 and 400 and the global Cruiser on ear bluetooth model AHNCW500bk.  Receivers were the AVRX3000 and 4000 and there is a small headphone amp the DA300USB on there too.  Also a couple micro systems, 2 bluetooth speakers and the DNV755 network streamer.  Since I'll have to call for availability just call me at 3148073857 if anything here interests you.

Thanks

And Bob would be there with his trusty camera to mark that moment in GAS history!

Sorry I lashed out guys.  Just got a little tired of the negativity towards my posts.  That said, it hasn't been coming from the GAS gang.  At least not since DAVES dressed me down on my first post.

Dear folks,

I don't want to be a part of any fracas here. I choose my own battles. But I do want to weigh in on Denon headphones with an opinion which, if not pontifical, is at least a studied one.

For years I went through different headphones, looking for sufficient deep bass. The Denon AH-D5000 had been recommended to me as the answer to my prayers, and one weekend a friend lent me his while he was out of town. I put them on to listen, and yes, there it was! What I had been missing. But after about 15 minutes the sound became oppressive--it felt like too much bass. Then it became fatiguing. Then irritating--because it did not seem musically accurate.

I looked at the response graph put together by HeadRoom (and unlike some people I do place much confidence in their measurements; in fact I think they are exemplary!), and their graph was showing about exactly what I was hearing. The response was at about +5 dB from approximately 30 to 300 Hz. It was +2 dB at 20 Hz. So when at last there was sufficient bass, it actually was too much. People have bemoaned the passing of this headphone. (It sure sounded right on the mids and highs!) And it can still be purchased NOS on Amazon at ridiculously high prices. But after that experience I kind of gave up on Denon's.

Then, recently, there floats in a pair of Denon AH-D 1100 cans. They retail at about $200, although one can find them for about $100. They had been donated for the McGurk's auction, which is coming up, and I thought I would do the potential buyer a favor by burning them in for 200 hours. After that, well, of course I had to listen at least briefly. I was stunned. This pair of Denon's by far bettered the 5000's, and they are a lot cheaper. Plus they come with an extension cable and a size adapter. For closed-back listening I had bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-770's which are considered among the best. This was so I wouldn't irritate my wife by using my preferred open-back headphones when we traveled. I would soon find that a great advantage of the closed-back cans is that they tend to block out noise I myself don't want to hear. They aren't as good as the DT-880's, but they are close, and I have kept them as my traveling tool, and for when I want to block out the stove motor noise in the winter.

Well, I did a comparison between those top-rated Beyerdynamic and these Denon AH-D 1100's and the two headphones were so close in sound it was uncanny. They are both 32-ohm cans; the Denon's are a little more sensitive. I truly was thinking that I might get rid of the Beyerdynamic's and go for the Denon's because of their speed and immediacy. It took a full four hours of comparative listening, in two days, to decide that the Beyerdynamic's are better--in three ways only. Maybe 3% tighter in the deep bass, maybe 4% richer in the mid-bass, and about 5% more well defined when it comes to layering of soundstage. The Beyerdynamic's I realized are just as immediate and fast as the Denon 1100's, but they need about 15 minutes of warm-up with each listening to be able to do this.

So ... keep in mind that the 1100's are far from being top-of-the-line Denon's. And keep in mind that I was expecting them to sound cheap. Instead, they are a great headphone!

Admittedly, I haven't heard the other recent Denon models. Maybe they're better than the 1100's; maybe they're worse. But I'll tell you, this was a lesson to me (once again--I'm a slow learner) to keep an open mind about any piece of audio gear, not make generalizations, and never take the attitude that price has to be equal to quality.

I didn't start this response with the idea of putting in a word about the upcoming McGurk's auction, but I might as well. These 1100's will be in that auction. I know one person who plans to bid on them. (Not me. I'll stick with my kraut cans.) Depending on the financial enthusiasm of the person I know who is going to bid, you might be able to get a very, very fine pair of closed-back Denon's at a very good price. Opening bid will be only $20. I hope they fetch at least $80.

But back to Denon's: I'm not going to make any all-encompassing judgement about them, given what I heard in these 1100's. Maybe it's true that they are rarely worth more than half their retail price; I don't know. Maybe they're worth twice their retail price. These 1100's are.

The truth is, headphones are a tough call. They never quite satisfy. They always have limits that can be clearly demarcated. And they never, ever come close to living up to their hype. We'll see what happens with the world of planar headphones now that Stax has been joined by Audeze, HiFi Man, Oppo, and that limey one called the Abyss which sells for between $5,000 and $6,000 American dollars depending on the exchange rate. Of these, I've only heard the Audeze, and they are amazing, but oh so heavy. Who wants to listen to music wearing a cement block on top of one's head?

So ... on this topic, I recommend to those who would judge both some degree of humility, and an open mind. These attitudes might serve you well, both financially and musically.

Euphonically yours,

Francis Baumli

Thank you for the personal experience review Francis.

When it comes to headphones I do not have a great deal of experience with them mostly based on cost.  The headphones that I own personally are  cans are from NuForce and earbuds from NuForce and Klipsch.  From a business aspect I would love to carry headphones for my customers but since I do not have a shop or the budget for enough demo product to do the segment justice.  With the proliferation of online retailers it has become very difficult to survive in the retail space selling personal/portable consumer electronics though this does not mean that I wouldn't order anything that I have access to if a customer wanted it.
So to remind those who may have forgotten what I offer or to introduce myself to those I have not met I am Matt and I run Riverside Audio and Video, a custom electronics integration company.  Riverside AV provides design, sales and installation of home theater, integration and control systems, lighting and shade systems, light commercial, hospitality and House of worship audio and video systems and digital signage.  If you have an electronics purchase planned and would like to see if I can help find the right product for you and help save you money please contact me.

Matt I'm sorry if your feel like I disrespected you. That was not my intent. My name is James and if you would ever like to listen to my headphone setup I'm free most Tuesdays. My airbow/stax/auralic setup was pretty well received at a recent stl. headphone meet.

James,
Trust me, I don't hold a grudge.  I actually wished I could have made it to the headphone meet but had to work that day.  My problem with your post that day was your approach.  One thing I learned years ago is that what one person finds of poor quality another finds it of great value.  And I learned it much in the same manner this thread went wrong, only in my instance I was face to face with that person.  In the verbal lashing I was handed by a customer in front of my manager at the time I was able to understand how I made that person feel.  That is a feeling that I do not wish to inflict on another and, as such, I get upset when such a situation is encountered.
It is pretty clear to me by your response that you intended no ill will with your post.  In a thread that would have been about the sound or quality of a particular item the post would likely have not raised much more than an eyebrow.  So, to summarize, apology accepted.  Reset button pressed.

Just in the "FWIW" category, since the Denon headphones of which I speak have long since been discontinued:  the 7000's were, and are, still very much sought after, and can still 'hold their own', so to speak, with many similar priced or more expensive 'cans.  I happen to have a pair fully modified by Lawton Audio (which is why many folks buy the discontinued Denons), such that they are now "LA7000's", and they are quite bit better, for my tastes and in my opinion, than the following headphones I have personally owned:  Senn HD650's, Hifiman HE-500's and HE-460's (still own and love the 460's, but the LA7000's are better 8)) and Audeze LCD-2's....

I realize that this may be not really topical given the thread discussion and what the OP is saying is available in the referenced sale, but I just didn't want a casual passerby to read this thread and get the wrong impression about all Denon headphones.
