Building LS-6 Shipping Crates
« on: 8 Feb 2015, 09:59 pm »
Looking for some advice. I would like to build shipping crates for my LS-6. I'm thinking of using some sort of plywood and cutting boards for a 20"X14"X70" box. I'm hoping it would not be too heavy. Perhaps throw some hinges on a couple of sides to get the speakers in and out. Also, use some sort of foam and blankets for interior protection. Any help will be much appreciated... Thanks

Look at this thread, about halfway down. Might be of some help. The key to keeping it light will be using thinner plywood with a frame to give it rigidity. I'm not sure the hinge would prove useful, unless you need to move them a lot.

If you plan on letting UPS ship them seriously consider overbuilding and/or insuring them for three times their retail value. It is amazing how much damage they can inflict on crates.

At the very least, put skids on the bottom that are no less than 3 1/2 inches thick. That way the fork truck drivers can easily get their forks under the crate without running them through the crate.

This advice comes both from having to repair damaged crates UPS delivered to my house and from having been a fork lift operator who loaded trucks for many years. If you are unsure about spacing, look at how pallets are built.

Having sent several large speakers threw different carriers, over build and INSURE them.
I even had carries drive a fork lift direct threw the middle of the speaker crate with a fork lift. Then hold me hostage for insurance claim for 3 months.
Personally use 2X2 framing with plywood wrap the cabinets in bubble wrap 2 layers then use 2" of solid foam lining all walls of the cabinets.

Regarding insurance, if 1 speaker is damaged they will reimburse you (hopefully and eventually) for 1 speaker. If they are a matched pair, that might be useless, so insure for 2 to 3 times the replacement cost.
