DIY Magnepan MG3a speaker stands- a little help
« on: 11 Feb 2015, 10:17 pm »
I need a little help with some DIY Magnepan stands I am building. I am basing them off of Green Lantern's DIY stands, found here -

http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/tweaks/green_lantern/

Since his are designed for MG 3.5, the edge has an overall rounded shape, therefore, he uses a 2" conduit strap to secure the stand to the edge. His solution is perfect for the 3.5's. See the pics in the above link.

But the MG3 and 3A's have a squared edge of about 1 1/2 inches.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could use (to substitute for rounded conduit strap) that would be squared off?

I don't really like the look of those clamps that come around and are visible from the front.  Why not just attach directly to your side pieces on the back side with appropriate screws??

I was thinking of that.

The only problem is that the the wooden trim piece has a trench cut into for its entire length, and the speaker panel fits into it. So, the end result is that there really isn't that much wood to screw into, since the wood wraps around the panel.

I agree with Davey, I don't like those wrap around brackets either. I'd be staring at them all the time. I have Mye Stands on my IIIA's. The angled tubes just have a tab at the top with a hole in it. You screw through it with a washer and screw right into the particle board. I don't use my oak rails anymore since I rebuilt my speakers but the tabs would be inside the wood caps anyway. Not home right now but I can send a pic.

I don't mind the look of the clamps, since they will be finished by my artist girlfriend to look very good.

But, I don't mind attaching them just from the back, if I can do it without compromising the integrity of the wood.

If you pull one of them off you can see where they ran the router through - there's a fair amount of wood on the outside so you can drill your pilot holes there.
Even if you drill into the MDF it won't hurt anything.
