Switching to HT from 2-ch...couple questions
« on: 21 Sep 2004, 05:18 am »
I would like to incorporate my 2-ch system into a basic HT system for 80% music 20% HT use but have a couple questions first.

I currently use a pair of 4-way Chalcedony's with (powered) integrated subs from Selah, with plans to add the matched center channel very soon and rears when I can afford it.  I'll be using this projector package http://www.socalelectronics.com/prodView.asp?idProduct=39   My 2-ch SS amplification is Odyssey Khartago amp but I will likely switch to Stratos HT 3CH amp to satisfy the center channel.

I need recommendations on a Pre/pro that will be suitable for 2-ch and 5.1 HT use, all in one unit with a $1K budget (used equipment is fine).  I will only use the HT system for DVD's, no HDTV. Also, is there any point in spending over, say, $200-$300 for a DVD player since I'm dealing with a budget model projector and my main concern is 2-ch audio?

Thanks
Chris

I have a preamp (norh ACA) for 2-channel that has an A/V pass-through. The signal from the HT part of my system passes though the 2-channel preamp unmodified to my 2-channel amps.

On the HT side I have an Outlaw 950 Preamp/Processor that handles anything HT (DVD player and XBox). It passes all signals to my HT amps - Center, L Surround, R Surround, and to my preamp for Front L and R.

The Outlaw can handle up to 7.1 and does all the processing formats. It is only a preamp (and processor), you will need amps for all of your speakers.

An incredible preamp with A/V pass-through, that would work well with the Oulaw ($800) is the IRD Purist Preamp ($665). You could use the IRD MB-100s as monoblock amps.

jqp,

Thanks for your input.  I like the idea of keeping a 2-ch pre and going Receiver for HT.  I'm a little unsure of how to handle the low level input for the subwoofer part of my 4-ways.  If I use a receiver and send the signal for my mains (which contain the integrated subs) through the preamps AV pass-through, will a signal still be sent through to the subs or do I need to send the signal to my subs from the HT receivers sub out?  I will be using the subs for both 2ch and HT applications, does there need to be a change made to the low level in everythime I switch from 2-ch to HT?  Does it depend on the paticular pre I'm using?

Thanks again for you help
