Best remote setup
« on: 22 Jan 2015, 03:41 pm »
I need to start researching the best option for my new system for a remote control solution.  I can't stand having multiple remotes.

Here is the setup:  Please give me your thought based upon my particular equipment.  I do not need this to do anything else in the house.  Just to seamlessly run all my Audio Video Equipment.

3 Odyssey Kismet ++ Monoblocks + 1 Odyssey Kismet Stereo amp, Von Schweikert Audio - VR4jr's Front, LCR-15 Center, TS-150's rear, 2 V-10 subs, Bryston SP3 Preamp, Silenzio + 6TB NAS Server, ZenWave Audio Cables, Zenwave Audio Edition SurgeX SEQ Power Conditioner.

I also have a Mac Mini and getting a new tv (not sure what yet).

Chris,
Your setup mostly lists amps, speakers and cables.  The only thing that works with a remote is the SP3.  What is you multiple remote issue, given the lineup?

A tv will add one more issue of course, but likely it will have a rudimentary learning remote capability for its own remote.  For universal remotes I love my Philips Pronto, but ipad-based ones or a Harmony (logitech) one would work too, and you'll likely only need to learn the tv and SP3 codes.

I think the SilenZio Server is going to be key on this too.  I am not sure what it requires, but it is my understanding that it uses JRiver Media Center 20 and Exact Audio Copy.

The amps will actually stay on 24/7 per Klaus' recommendation.

So the way I see it, we are looking at TV, Silenzio, Bryston SP3 and Mac Mini.  The mini can be separate, as I have the pad and keyboard for it anyway.

Chris,
Are you interested in using your iPad/iPhone as the remote?  Universal Remote control has a system to do just that.  I believe that Harmony does now as well.  They have a controller/ir repeater that is connected to your network and sits in your equipment rack.  This would also be nice if you have enclosed equipment cabinets.  Then there is an application for your iDevice to control the system.

I own the Harmony in question, and it can indeed use an iPad or ios device running an app to control your whole setup.

It works best in a media closet or enclosed rack though, so the base unit can blast IR around and it bounces to where it is needed.  The base unit ships with 1 extra blaster, and can use another one too, so not hard to get all your gear working with it.

My only challenge is that the remote included with that base unit has no IR on its own.  My older Harmony 900 remote did emit IR on its own, PLUS blast RF to the base unit to blast IR again from it.

My good friend controls his entire setup with it, BUT has to turn his TV on and off with the stock remote as a result.

It is a decent setup for me.

URC has multiple solutions but in comparison to Harmony it requires deeper pockets.  All of the URC remotes have IR and RF so they can broadcast to the unit in the closet and still emit IR for the TV.  I can suggest what products you would need but it is a professional product so you would likely need to find an integrator in your area.  PM me and I can help with that too.
