VU meter project....
« on: 6 Dec 2014, 06:00 pm »
Had some VU meters lying around, and they are fun to watch! The 12 volt board is from eBay and just about everything else from either Rat Shack or stuff I had lying around. Driver board is adjustable to match VU meters to output of board. I just put my tuner in mono and set for "0 to +1" reading. Of course almost all radio stations are over-modulating their signals, can't do anything about that.

This is hooked up to my record out on my AVA Insight+ preamp, which I use primarily for FM listening, with my wonderful Marantz ST-17B, Sony XDR-1FHD, Onkyo T-4555, Denon TU-1500RD and Yamaha T-07 tuners.

BTW, it's not fun cutting rectangular holes.......

Looks like a fun idea. I want big meters though.  :duh:

Wayner, cool project. I would like to know can I install a VU meter in a ncore mono block, or would it be better to make a separate panel an hook to my preamp. Thanks ZAK

The meters require a driver board to operate them. The driver board has a high isolation impedance and does not disturb the record out of the preamp or the receiver. The board that I chose required a 12 volt, 400ma (.4 amps) power source to drive, and that is why I made it external.

I'm not holding by breath, but this would be an awesome custom option on AVA power amps....
