Cartridge Question
« on: 27 Dec 2015, 04:29 am »
I own a Benz Micro SMS Glider cartridge. (I think it is the medium output). I bought it used and have been using for 3 years but with low hours. Question is how can I tell if the stylus is worn (other than it sounding like crap Lol). It sounds nice but I future that they wear gradually and I may not even be aware of the wear.

Also, If I do buy another cartridge I am not sure how this compares to other cartridges in the sub $1000 range. Thanks for your input.

I'd email the US distributor and inquire about an evaluation. Sumiko did this for my SHO a number of years ago for free, seems like that should be part of their service.

Does Benz still have a US distributor?   They're not being sold in the US anymore.

If it has low hours don't worry about it for now.  You should get more than 1K hours if you keep the needle clean and play clean records.  When the sound starts to degenerate send it to Benz or a re-tipper for evaluation.

They do have a distributor. I dealt with them some years ago and they were very helpful.

A stylus evaluation will tell you if you are setting your anti-skate correctly, too.

Ok so I do clean LPs with a DIY "VPI like" machine. I use record doctor solution. TheVPI Classic 2 was set up by a friend using the fozgometer and he also set the VTA. I ultimate the cartridge has about 700-800 hours.

Neobop,

You make a good point in you statement about 'when the sound deteriorates'.  I have a microscope.  A good one.  I have never been able to convincingly state that I can see wear on a stylus.  Yes, I have seen fractures, but not actual 'wear'.  I have heard a deterioration of a cartridges performance before I have seen anything that would even make me consider that there is something not quite right in what I am seeing in the microscope.  To pin point a 'hour use' number is foolish I think.  Far to many variables to consider.  I think you 'statement' is just about the best method as to determine when it is time to lay your precious to rest!   :)
