SST Amps with RM 40's
« on: 15 Sep 2004, 04:40 am »
After reading some comments from the SoCal listening session this past weekend, I am again thinking about the SOA or Ampzilla 2000 amps for my system.

Has anybody directly compared the SOA vs. Ampzilla 2000?

Is anybody out there running dual SOA in a vertical bi-amp?

Is anybody out there running the SOA + another amp in a bi-amp setup?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Iwould imagine that there are only two people who "might" have had that opportunity to have heard both.

1) Brian Cheney
2) Possibly Julian Turner if he has a Son

While I have heard both on VMPS speakers, I have not heard both on the RM40s.

When I finally get another pair of RM40s, I intend to Bi-Amp using the SoA for the top and the CineNova for the bottom.

I never heard a direct comparison, but I believe both Brian and Jim (ribbonspeakers.net) preferred the SoA to the A2000.

Just finished talking with James and he suggested going with the Ampzilla 2000 mono blocks over the SOA.

If memory serves, the suggested "issue" w/ the A2000 was the input balanced/unbalanced switch having a negative effect on sonics.

Don't know if it's possible, but will James remove the switch from the circuit on request? Is it possible to audition both in your room? Maybe a vacation to the SF Bay Area is in order, where you can A/B them in the famed Big B listening room!
