iPhone emitting EMI possibly, anyone else?
« on: 20 Jan 2015, 12:15 am »
Hello all, I am wondering if anyone else has experienced any problems similar to what I'm having? A quick system overview:
1:iPhone 5
2:Schiit Modi USB DAC
3:Marantz 1030 integrated
4:KEF C30's

So my issue is that when I hold the phone scrolling through music or whatever, sometimes i hear a real fast clicking in the background. And if I move the phone around it goes in and out and once in a while will just quit the odd noise. Not sure if the phone is emitting some type of frequency or what it could be. The Marantz has a 3-wire power cord I should add. But it's nothing that sounds like a ground loop hum, just an odd noise. Tough to explain. I also had the same issue when using just the headphone-RCA cable. So that would rule out the dac. It doesn't do it in my other system connected via lightning connector to the USB on either of my other to receivers. Wondering  if any body else has experienced anything similar? Thanks so much for any help.

It more than likely does, as does any other device or phone operating in the tri- or quad-band cellular UHF, or 2.4 GHz (UHF)/5 GHz (SHF) wifi spectra. Is the iPhone controlling a device that's feeding the system (computer, Apple TV, Airport Express, etc.), or is it isolated? I've heard what you're describing when receiving text messages (or other cellular reception) if I'm very close to the system components. There are a lot of antennas in audio systems that can pass that garbage along through to your speakers.

It's not necessarily "controlling" anything, it's plugged into a powered USB hub which also powers the Modi. Maybe I will have to look into some type of isolation device. I know schiit also makes a USB isolation device but it seems like it may be up in the air as to whether that would solve the problem.
Yea I understand how there's a million different waves flying around at one time, but I might just have to set the phone further away and see if that helps, or possibly get a Schiits USB isolation device and see what happens. Thanks so much for your response as I see most people on this circle use more of a "computer" for audio storage.

Thanks
